Katrina Hodgkinson MP, Minister for Primary Industries
I am writing to you in your capacity as the [position].
Information revealed recently from Aussie Farms' campaign against cruelty in the pork industry has alerted me to the inhumane practices being carried out at Blantyre Farms' Golden Grove and Dead Horse Gully Piggeries near Young, NSW.
In the video footage captured by activists, I saw sows confined to tiny metal cages within 'farrowing crates' for up to six weeks at a time. In the farrowing crates, sows showed signs of distress, exhibiting stereotypies (abnormal repetitive behaviours) such as bar biting, rubbing repetitively on bars and protruding edges, prolonged pressing and pushing, head bowing, weaving, stepping back and forward and 'sham' chewing. Many have great difficulty standing up or lying down due to weakness, the tiny size of their cages, and the slippery metal floor. Some pigs had less than two inches of space in front or behind them, and all were unable to take more than one or two steps forwards or backwards, and were unable to turn around. They are kept here for upwards of six weeks at a time.
David Hewson, the manager of Blantyre Farms, is seen on hidden camera footage repeatedly smacking and poking sows with both ends of an oar, in order to get them to stand up - he does this to every sow he finds lying down, every day he is working in the farrowing crate shed. This is often done in full view of other employees. Whenever sows see him coming, they are visibly scared and try to stand up, but often fail to do so in time.
A large number of dead and dying piglets were found at Golden Grove Piggery on each night of footage obtained by Aussie Farms. Many of these were simply left in the aisles, often in full view of their mothers who could see through the bars beneath their feeding trough. A number of piglets were killed or severely injured by "overlay", where the sows lie on top of their piglets, crushing them. The industry claims farrowing crates prevent overlay, however Blantyre Farms proves the logical counterance to that argument, that where the sows have such difficulty standing or lying and are unable to move away from their young, and where the piglets have little room of their own, overlay is inevitable.
Workers at Blantyre Farms' Golden Grove Piggery cut off the tails and teeth of piglets, and cut sections out of their ears, all without pain relief. Tails are discared in the aisles and sometimes even end up in the food trolley. In Blantyre's grower facility, Dead Horse Gully (DHG) Piggery, there is a severe cannibalism problem with pigs biting off the stubs of each others' tails due to overcrowding and a completet lack of stimulation, even after their tails have been cut off.
When moving piglets between farrowing crates or taking them from their mothers to be moved across the road to DHG Piggery, workers pick them up by one leg and throw them into trolleys, the piglets often landing head-first or crashing into others already in the trolley.
Blantyre has an artificial insemination "rape shed" in which six boars (male pigs) and a number of sows are kept. Semen is "extracted" from the boars by workers. Sows due to be re-impregnated (shortly after being moved out of the farrowing crates) are then moved into small cages approximately the size of sow stalls, and the semen is forcefully inserted into them by the workers via tubes called Pork Storks. This process sometimes needs to be repeated one or a few times before the sow becomes pregnant, at which stage she is moved into the large group housing sheds, which features row upon row of open-backed sow stalls, where the sows can move out into a small corridor between the stalls, but must return to the stalls for food and water or to avoid being attacked by other sows, as is common due to the overcrowded, unstimulating conditions. The air in this shed is filthy, and for the sixteen weeks of their pregnancy the sows remain trapped here without sunlight, on concrete floor where they must live amongst each others' urine and faeces (in natural conditions, pigs will urinate and defecate far away from where they sleep and eat).
I implore you to do all in your power to shut down Blantyre Farms' Golden Grove and Dead Horse Gully Piggeries immediately.

Shut down this concentration camp..only psychopaths could work here and own this facility. Disgusting .

I have never liked intensive farming of any animal. It totally unnecessary in this day and age to farm like this. These pigs are living creatures with feeling and senses like us so that if they are hurt or mistreated they can feel it. How anyone can harm an animal, any animal, like this is beyond me. And am so sick and tired of hearing about the money dude of things. More people want to eat free range and organic foods now more than ever. These places belong in our past, not our future. Shut it down before it opens up.

It's a travesty when in this day and age, we let GREED and CRUELTY exist - perhaps the beneficiaries of the $s might want them and their families to spend their existence like that, that they are forcing on these animals - and absolute disgrace - boycott them for starters.

I was one of a small number of people allowed to see inside a rural piggery. The farmer made every effort to improve the quality of the pigs' lives. Initiatives included ensuring the pens were clean and airy, giving them items to chew and play with, making sure they had space to move, and playing soft music, which they definitely enjoyed. They even had preferences as to what sort of music they liked, and would react differently to different types. Compared to this, large intensive factory farms are just horrible. You wouldn't wish that sort of life on your worst enemy. They've got to go.

Priya Fernandes Mon 6/6/16 12:57pm
While it is acknowledged that human beings will never stop eating defenceless animals, it is incumbent upon us to provide them with a decent environment during their brief life. Please do not approve cruelty in the form of factory farming. If we are to make any progress on the ethical front, free range is the way to go. Stop enabling and abetting this cruelty. Premier Baird is a devout Christian. is this what his Christian faith has taught him? To encourage cruelty to harmless and defenceless animals?
Andrea Mason Thu 2/6/16 7:58pm
Oh my god. I had tears rolling down my face watching all these videos. The government needs to step in and stop this happening to the pigs and also other animal industries. The RSPCA should also be working with the government and use every means possible to change how the pigs are housed and looked after. Because clearly by the videos they are not looked after. They may be animals but they are a living thing, have feelings and hurt and feel pain. At Blantyre Farms (and many others too) has inadequate housing etc. No sunshine, no room to move, the smell and all the death and what hurts too is the poor sow has to watch their piglets sick or dying etc. There pens, well cant really call them pens. They cant even turn around in the pen and are on slippery, metal floors. They don't look like they cared for cos of the sores and seeing some pigs hardly able to walk or lying down and cant get up etc. They need to be looked after and vet checked and not live in their own poo and urine. They are too confined and squashed in their enclosures with others and too small of pens with their piglets. So l beg you to do something about this farm and all other farms and make sure farmers care for their animals. These videos make it bad for the farmers who treat their animals good. To some farmers the animals are just $ products. Yes it is their living and livelihood but treat the animals right not like they nothing and have no feelings etc. So please step up both the local, state and federal governments and give the RSPCA more help and right to deal with these bad farms. The videos were hard to watch but as a consumer l had to watch them with tears and disbelief that any human could let animals live this way and treat them disgustingly and cruelly in a lot of cases. And there must be a better way to euthanize animals than the pain l saw in videos of gasing them. Was not quick etc. Was hard to watch what they had to go through to die. Please do something and stop these farms and the so called farmers who run these farms. This has put me off eating pork when l see how the pigs are kept and what the poor pigs are going through. Look after the welfare of all animals.
Peter Fell Tue 10/5/16 7:17pm
As a retired Australian I no longer eat pork, which used to be a favourite food of mine, because of the underlying cruelty within the industry. The Blantyre Farms' Golden Grove and Dead Horse Gully Piggeries near Young, NSW appear to follow this pattern and as a result do not deserve to remain open. The people responsible should be held accountable and charged with all the force the law allows. Pigs are as intelligent as dogs and are claimed to be as intelligent as a 3 year old child. Who would treat a child as these pigs are treated?
Maureen Foster Thu 5/5/16 5:53am

We are meant to be a civilised soiety yet we continue with the Abuse of animals all in the name of demand & big profits with no regard for the welfare of animals,
Yet we accuse other countries & banned for a time the export of stock and yet we as an Australian nation deal unbelievable cruelty all in the name of greed, Shame on us for not caring enough to put an end to this mass cruelty to pigs.

Why aren't these people held accountable for their appalling process.
Just one reason why I don't eat pig products.

I just saw Blantyre Farms Piggery on Landline, Channel 24, at 3:20 AM on 6/3/16 being praised for turning "pig poo" into useable energy. What this news piece also highlighted, although inadvertently, were the deplorable living conditions of these poor pigs in sheds with slippery filth-covered metal grate floors. There was also barely any room for these pigs to move about in while waiting to eat a hodge-lodge of wet mushy dog food. I am horrified to see animals being kept in conditions such as these in Australia. It's positively shameful. It is unacceptable to keep dogs in these conditions (a.k.a. puppy mills), it is unacceptable for pigs. These beautiful, intelligent animals deserve better.

Mitchell Parkinson Thu 17/12/15 10:22am
Pigs have extremely complex emotions - they experience similar stress when being separated from their partner as humans do - and are having to suffer hearing the screams from inside the gas chamber. They scrabble desperately to escape.
The footage shows a clearly disabled pig, unable to walk into a gas chamber, repeatedly prodded with an electric goad before a frustrated abattoir worker jumps into the run and kicks it twice.
I believe everyone who eats pork should watch this film. If they are unmoved then fine, continue to eat pork, otherwise STOP, or at the very least make sure you know the supplier has eared and killed the animals in the lost humane ways possible.
Scott Miles Wed 25/11/15 8:46pm

I want to make it clear that I am not against farming animals nor of profitable business models however these things shouldn't be excuses or justifications of the animal cruelty and neglect that is clearly evident in your farming practices. Sadly this is supported further by irresponsible and unsatisfactory "industry standards". Get your shit together and start working for both animals and people. We're not that different.
Furthermore, any farmers/workers seen to condone or encourage cruel farming practices should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law, and if the law won't protect these animals then that too must be changed.

Pigs have the same level of intelligence as a 6 year old child. Australia would not allow a human to be treated in this disgustingly cruel manner yet we allow it in piggeries? Animals feel pain, suffer from stress and experience fear just the same as us. Make Australia a kinder country and put these cruel companies out of business!
Jenny Kyng Mon 15/12/14 1:14am
The cruelty and abuse that takes place in this piggery and others as part of normal standard practice is absolutely disgusting and utterly indefensible morally. The animals lives terrible lives and die in terror and in pain. These creatures are sentient beings. They feel pain, fear, horror and, like all mammals, grief. It is the height of ignorance and barbarity to assume that it is OK to treat sentient beings as if they were merely bits of machinery simply because they are animals. We too are animals. What outrage would we feel if a supposedly superior being treated us in this way? If we can treat animals like this then we can also treat our fellow humans appallingly, simply by designating them inferior.
Wendy Frere Sat 13/12/14 1:14pm
